Bathtub Baptism Turns Violent: Local Man Arrested After Alleged Assault

RIVERTON – Authorities are investigating a disturbing incident that unfolded late last night at the residence of Arthur Jenkins, 42, a local accountant. The event, described by responding officers as a “self-directed ritual,” culminated in a reported assault and has sparked widespread concern within the Riverton community.

Initial reports indicate that Mr. Jenkins, known locally for his quiet demeanor and meticulous bookkeeping, was observed by neighbors engaging in a lengthy and increasingly erratic ceremony within his bathtub. Witnesses described the scene as involving water, candles, and what appeared to be a repeated recitation of phrases relating to “cleansing” and “acceptance.” According to police reports, the event took a dramatic turn when a woman identified as Sarah Miller, 31, a freelance journalist, entered the residence after receiving a distressed phone call from a neighbor.

“She seemed… lost,” recounted Mr. Henderson, a neighbor who called 911. “Just rambling about needing to ‘be free’ and ‘let go of the past.’ It was unsettling, to say the least.” Ms. Miller alleges that Mr. Jenkins then forcibly restrained her within the bathtub and subsequently assaulted her. She was transported to Riverton General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police arrived on the scene shortly after receiving the 911 call and apprehended Mr. Jenkins. He is currently being held at the Riverton County Jail and faces charges of aggravated assault and unlawful confinement.

“He kept repeating, ‘I’m finally shedding the weight,’ ” stated Officer Davis, the first officer on the scene. “It was… bizarre. The water was almost completely drained by the time we got there.”

The circumstances surrounding Mr. Jenkins’ actions remain unclear. Mental health professionals have been requested to assess his condition. Local therapist Dr. Eleanor Vance commented, “Rituals like this, particularly when coupled with expressions of feeling trapped, can sometimes be indicative of deep-seated psychological distress. It’s crucial we understand the underlying issues driving this behavior.”

The Riverton County District Attorney’s office has confirmed they are reviewing the case and will determine the appropriate charges based on the evidence gathered. Further updates will be provided as they become available.
